So, this has been an idea kicking around in the back of my brain for a while -- the thought of attending Clarion West. For those not in the know, it's a writing workshop here which focuses on speculative fiction and is taught by industry professionals.
Advantages? It's here in Seattle, which is convenient, and it's one of the foremost workshops of it's kind in the country. A close friend who attended in 1990 not only recommends it, but feels that I'm at the place in my life and writing where it would be a lot of good for me. The instructors this year are fabulous, and it's not like I have relationships that won't survive the lengthy workshop. Which takes us to disadvantages.
Disadvantages? Well, let's take the fact that it's six weeks living, breathing and sleeping writing. This is done in the dorm, so you live on "campus" and you don't work. Anyone want to sublet for July and half of August? And as for work, in theory I might be able to take the time off, just pad with vacation time and some unpaid time off, but while it's okay with my co-workers, HR, and my manager, the office manager might take exception to it. So I'm not 100% sure there will be a job waiting for me when I'm done. Also, the program only accepts 18 people. Did I mention that it brings in people from all over the country if not the world? Did I mention that Mr. Chuck "Fight Club" Palahnuik is one of the instructors? Oh, and let us not forget the $3,200 price tag. I mean, there are scholarships available, but I should be prepared to accept the fact that even if I get in, I can't afford to go.
Oh, did I mention that my application packet, with scholarship form is sitting at my side, ready to be mailed? I'm going with "Fists of Felt" as my writing sample. Yeah, that's me...aiming for the stars. Cross your fingers, say a prayer, knock over a convenience store and send me 30% of the ill-gotten gains...whatever moves you.
I'm gonna need it. :D
Hopefully I'll find out in the next few months, by March at least, I suspect, one way or the other.

We're all right here behind you, Go writer, go!
I find karma sharing an excellent way to get the added help you need in tight situations.
I can get a round trip ticket and a week at the El Cortez Hotel and Casino in Vegas for about a twelfth of the cost. I'll still have to pay for food for the week, so it adds a little to the over-all expense, but the hotel is a block off Freemont (aka Glitter Gulch), so there are inexpensive options readily available and the on-site hotel is something like Miss Kitty's Hideaway.
How is this back-up significant? Well, I can jet down there after work on a Friday, spend my birthday week holed up in a seedy Vegas hotel and pound out the bulk of the next Gato Loco novel. As plan "B" goes, it could be a lot worse. ;)
